Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Where can I subscribe to your newsletter? Answer: You can subscribe to The Hungry Forager newsletter here. Thanks for your interest and support!
Question: Will you identify this plant or mushroom for me? Answer: I don’t have time to perform identifications, maybe when I’m older and have less going on (young children, writing, researching, being a husband, backpacking, foraging or processing wild foods) I’ll enjoy this. But for now, if I’m not nearby in-person, utilize the existing literature that could help you make a determination (or the internet if all else fails).
Question: Where can I forage legally in my area? Answer: This is a very important question and one to be as possibly aware of as you can be before heading off and blindly foraging. Most state parks and nature preserves do not allow foraging of any kind while most national forest do permit certain items to be foraged. Public lands for that matter can have nuanced foraging laws, from being illegal, unknown to well understood and permitted to the public. My recommendation is to do some general research on the specific locations website (if it had one) and or to even make a brief phone call to the place you wish to forage at asking if and what's allowed to be foraged (typically fruits, nuts, and mushrooms are allowed if anything). Foraging wild foods can also push you to make social connections with private landowners. This is certainly an ideal option and could easily result in you gathering a larger quantity of any one particular plant, berry, nut or mushroom. Building a relationship such as this with landowner(s) will afford you the chance to offer them reciprocal services in return (such as the removal of invasive plants) as well as a better understanding of the ecology that surrounds you while foraging on the property (as well as the wild edibles themselves). These relationships truly made me see things inherently different than I had previously and I’m forever grateful for these oppourtunities. At the end of the day, do the right thing and nature will reward you for it.
